An Evening Routine: Layering Serums and Oils

Last night I tried a new combination for my nightly mini bun/bantu knot nightly routine. (You can read more about why I use these knots to protect my hair overnight here, and how to modify this for different hair types). Because I am recovering from severe low-ferritin anemia, my daily hair care requires a very intentional approach. I am constantly looking for products that deliver structural strength, bond repair, and lasting moisture. Depending on what my hair needs most on a given day, I often mix these treatments together or use them separately.

The Base: 8 minibuns; applying Necessarie Rosemary Scalp Serum on the parted scalp sections and separating using satin scrunchies, this process is detailed in the shared post in the first sentence. I use the Neccessarie Scalp Serum for its benefits and ingredients, and luckily it smells like earthy ginger instead of weed, like most rosemary-scented items to me.

The Star: Virtue Recovery Damage Serum . The first thing I noticed about the Virtue serum is that it feels very different than any serum or leave-in I’ve tried, and I’ve tried hundreds (and that’s no exageration). I am still not sure how I feel about that. First, it has no slip. Think of it like gliding a product down your hair strands with your hands, but applying baby powder to your hands right before doing so. It absolutely needed to be followed up and sealed with an oil. But the ingredients are fantastic, so, maybe I am just too determined to make it work.
The Seal: Oribe Eternal Curls Polish & Protect Oil, one of my product favorites, a slightly sticky and dense oil. It doesn’t glide through the strands and feel like nothing, but it’s not greasy either. To balance out the stiffness of the serum, I applied the Oribe oil on top. It is a fantastic product that immediately provided the softness and slip my hair was missing, acting as the perfect sealant over the treatment.

When I took my hair down the next morning it had zero visible product residue, and it felt similar to a very drying gel but with no hold. It did not feel deeply hydrated, which is important to note for high-porosity hair. However, it absolutely delivered on strengthening. My fine strands throughout the back of my hair felt noticeably fortified and less fragile. This combination is an excellent choice for nights when repairing weak hair is the main priority, even if it means reaching for a hydrating product the following day. I usually keep my hair in a bun, until tonight, when I redo the routine.
